Adopt A Family Bikes (AAFB) was formed in 2002 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Danville, California.  Parishioners found that Adopt A Family wish lists (from Monument Crisis Center clients) often included a request for bikes as a means of transportation.  In the prior two years, used bikes had been donated and tires repaired by a female parishioner who had worked at a bike shop in her teens.  In 2002, a dad from John Baldwin Elementary stepped in and spent countless hours cleaning, repairing, and safety checking the collected bikes. Over the years the program has grown; more "core volunteers" stepped in, bike drives expanded and the numbers grew.   AAFB continues to operate under the 501 (c) 3 of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, but the program outgrew the space at St. Timothy's and larger accommodations have since been donated by generous local property owners.  What was once an effort funded and manned by St. Timothy's members has since become a community program with the support of individuals, local businesses, philanthropic organizations, schools, clubs, and scouting groups. The core volunteers remain year after year to take on the lion's share of the work and ensure the integrity of the program.

The bikes are distributed to the following nonprofit organizations.  Please click on the links to read more about them!

In our first year, 2002, we refurbished 45 bikes.  After the winter 2023 season, we have refurbished and distributed over 5,000 bikes, all going to recipients in need.  The bikes are a daily necessity as the majority of recipients cannot afford transportation to get to school, work, or appointments.  The joy in a child’s eyes and the gratitude from an adult recipient are immense!  The bikes make a HUGE difference in their lives and there’s always a need.
